Landmarks and Memories

Here I am in the snow and cold at the Arctic Circle. Somewhere in that building behind me is Santa Claus. That's where all those begging letters from children go.

I sometimes wonder whether that's like going to Ramsgate, where most houses seem to have been lived in by Charles Dickens at one time or another. One of the exceptions even makes itslef unusual by pointing out the he didn't ever live there. So many places you go to in the frozen north seem to claim the children's letters for themsleves. I've been told the same thing in Norway (they go to Oslo) and in London, where some companies hijack the letters and charge you ten quid for a response to your child.

That is the true spirit of modern Christmas.
